HISTORY OF THESE DRAWINGS BEGINS IN 1985: During the mid-1980's I took drawing and painting classes at UW-Superior, Wisconsin, for my own personal creative development. (Although I did take credits for the classes as opposed to auditing them.) In those classes I made breakthroughs into abstract art in both paint and colors, and black and white pen and ink drawings. It was in one of those drawing classes that I started making 'scribbles' in 8x10 to 9x12 drawing paper tablets, discovering wonderful free-form images occurring. Soon thereafter I started filling in spaces of my choice in the drawing to 'flesh out' the emerging spontaneous art therein. Enjoying these drawings enormously, I produced a large number of them over the course of that semester's work. At one point I asked the instructor how to define the drawings so I could have a description for them. He called them curvilinear drawings; I began to call them my Curvilinear Series.
Fast forward to the year 2000. Since 1994 I had been compiling a book of poetry that had become a collection called, "When Love is an Enigma". In the book, with verse, I covered the subject of love from many perspectives. At that particular time someone was encouraging me to finish the manuscript, so I threw myself into a major update. I started to wonder about how I would create illustrations, and my thoughts returned to the Curvilinear drawings. When I retrieved them from storage, I was thrilled to discover that many of the drawings, in design-appearance, visibly 'matched' stories in the collection. It was terrific to me, too, that the perfect word to describe the drawings was that they are "enigmatic" ... somewhat mysterious. Not only did I include many of the drawings in the manuscript as illustrations, but I returned to the creating of new drawings. On occasion in the years since, I've continued to do so to the point that there are now around 225 archived in my studio.
I never sold any because I also had another vision for them; and that is to use them as the basis of a line of greeting cards, and any other products these images would complement! I truly believe this art is so much fun to the eye that I could see these drawings on a long list of products: the greeting cards, coffee mugs and other dishware, as accents on clothing, all the way to fabric design. But years and went by with no resolution for use. Happily, though, three years ago (2011) I started this website and I've been able to post all of them for people to see and muse over. This year (2014) I'm on the way to learning how to publish books with Amazon's Kindle . . . and am looking forward to getting back to the book illustrated by my Curvilinear Drawings.
Sometimes I play with adding color to the designs. I don't intend to do this will all . . . just when I feel like for a specific image. If you have ideas you'd like me to apply to an image, let me know at: doris.starofthenorth@gmail.com .
I've given these "scribble drawings" a more appropriate "fine art" kind of name: "HUMAN EMOTIONAL or THEMATIC CARICATURES, & PURE ART FORM". Click on the Slide Show button in the upper right hand corner--it's fun to watch them this way!
